Many moms regard breastfeeding as a better option than formula. Not too many people can answer “why” breastfeeding is considered such a good choice. I’ve taken the liberty to break down some of the many benefits for moms who are considering breastfeeding their baby.
1. Strong bones
Doctors have said that women who breastfeed are less susceptible to postmenopausal osteoporosis. Because a pregnant woman’s body absorbs calcium more easily, a few months after pregnancy her hip and spine bones are likely to be denser.
2. Weight control
Breastfeeding has been linked to stable weight. Women who breastfeed are least likely to become obese, as are their babies. Breastfeeding acts as a natural calorie incinerator and you can actually burn calories while nursing. This could be one of the reasons why women who breastfeed are less prone to obesity.
3. Long-term health protection
It has been said that breastfeeding reduces a baby’s risk of chronic conditions that could develop down the line such as Crohn’s disease, diabetes and even cancers in mom.
4. Quicker post-delivery healing process
When your baby nurses, your uterus loses less blood because of the oxytocin released during the breastfeeding process. Nursing also helps your uterus return to its original size up to 4 weeks faster than if you were not breastfeeding.
5. Lower risk of SIDS
Studies have been able to link a connection to fewer Sudden Infant Death instances in babies that are breastfed over babies that are not. In fact, breastfeeding is said to cut the risk of SIDS in half.
6. Cheaper than formula
Baby formula can easily cost you around $250 per month. This yearly expense can be exuberant in comparison to the custom-made milk supply that naturally comes from your own body.
7. A break from your period
Breastfeeding can delay ovulation, which is a terrifying thing for some women and a great thing for others. Delaying your menstrual cycle can give you a lot of freedom.
When you breastfeed you always have milk ready at just the right temperature for your baby and it’s just the lift of a shirt away. There’s no need to lug around formula, water and bottles wherever you go, or struggle with warming the milk before serving.
9. Learn about your baby
You become more in tune with your instincts and your baby’s body by breastfeeding than you do with bottle feeding. It’s much easier to know when the baby is full, because their food supply is coming directly from your body.
There are more benefits to breastfeeding than listed here. Let us know what you’ve discovered about breastfeeding!
