Another Milestone: Your Baby's First Toothbrush

The toothbrush is our best first friend, and our babies need one too! Your baby's first toothbrush should be an important milestone for you as a parent. What will you choose? There are so many options out there, but we want to help you find the perfect toothbrush for your little one. Consider this a training guide for your little one before they transition to their "big kid" toothbrush.

What to look for to choose the best first toothbrush for a baby

  • Size of the toothbrush: A baby's toothbrush is designed with the baby in mind. The toothbrushes are small and soft but are still sturdy enough to brush your baby's teeth.
  • Softness/hardness of bristles: Your baby's toothbrush should have soft bristles, which means no damage to a baby's gums and teeth. This is our primary concern when your baby has just started teething. Soft bristles are perfect for little mouths to chew on and to make your baby feel comfortable.
  • Comfortable grip: The baby's toothbrush should have a perfect size for a baby's hands and be able to hold the toothbrush without our help. The grip is specially designed for babies so they can easily hold onto the toothbrush without any fuss.
  • Fun design: Every toothbrush a baby uses will be a learning experience for your little one. Your baby's first toothbrush could even have fun designs for them to look at. The bright colors may be your baby's favorite part of their toothbrush.

What is the right age to purchase a baby's first toothbrush and to start brushing?

We recommend your baby's first toothbrush around three months and older. This is the perfect age to start getting your baby ready for brushing their own teeth and making it part of a daily routine. Starting early will make your little one more comfortable with having a toothbrush in their mouth, which makes them excited about new experiences, such as brushing their teeth!

Parents can start brushing their baby's teeth when their little one is ready to let you brush their gums and teeth without a fuss or resistance. This is usually around the time they are in their first year of life, but every child develops at a different pace. A first tooth is a milestone, welcome it with style, as it cleans while it comforts your baby.

It's important to remember that your baby will never be too young or old for a toothbrush. As parents, we should start early and regularly brush our babies' teeth as part of a daily routine.

How to care for a baby's teeth

  • Avoid toothpaste with fluoride: Fluoride is good for our teeth, but your baby needs to wait until they are old enough to use it. This helps avoid any risk of fluorosis if your baby ingests too much fluoride before the age of three years old.
  • Clean your baby's teeth with your baby's first toothbrush: Using a toothbrush for the baby, we can get the job done right. We should also avoid brushing the gums at this stage to prevent any damage that could be caused if your little one starts chewing on too hard of bristles. But if you choose to do that, gently brush gums and teeth in the process.
  • Cleaning is easy: You should change the toothbrush every two weeks or when your baby starts chewing on the bristles. Keeping it clean is important because it can get dirty quickly, and bacteria could be transferred between your little one's teeth if they are not cleaned properly after each use.
